A brief primer on wireless technology...

A wireless network is a flexible data communication system using radio frequency technology to transmit and receive data over the air. Wireless technology enables total business mobility.  Using a wireless notebook computers, mobile handheld computer, or bar code scanner, you can connect with co-workers, interact with customers, and obtain current information to make real-time decisions.  The result is increased productivity and lower operating costs.  Some of the wireless technologies available include:

  • Wireless LANs (802.11a/b/g)
  • Bluetooth, an emerging standard for short-range, point-to-multipoint communications.
  • GPRS/CDMA, combining a cellular phone network
  • RTLS, employing Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum technology to determine the location of transmitting beacons.

Key benefits of implementing wireless technology include:

  • Elimination of complex construction, infrastructure, and cabling requirements.
  • Instant, un-tethered data capture and continuous access to shared information.
  • Easy wireless setup for teleconferencing and changing workspaces.
  • Reach of network to areas that cannot be wired.
  • Scalability with quick corporate expansion simply by adding additional access points.

Solutions for complex environments:

  • Preparation / production floors
  • Warehouse storage / cold storage
  • Outdoor / freezer applications
  • Receiving / shipping areas
  • Bridging between buildings

Wireless technologies will continue to evolve and offer a higher standard of life by making us more mobile and increasing our ability to interact with each other, thus removing the distance barrier.
