Your symbol mobile computers may encounter a difficulty when first connecting to wireless access points from other manufacturers. You may already have received an error when trying to set up a connection profile that states something similar to the following message: "The profile you are trying to connect to may not connect due to regulatory rules."

Most notably, if you have a Cisco or Linksys access point and a Symbol mobile computer, you are probably encountering this trouble. The good news is that the fix is easy. The bad news is that you have probably pulled your hair out trying to find the answer.

In short, the problem is due to a setting for the 802.11d option. Symbol enables this by default. Details1.

1 The current 802.11 standard defines operation in only a few regulatory domains (countries). This supplement adds the requirements and definitions necessary to allow 802.11 WLAN equipment to operate in markets not served by the current standard. Enable the 802.11d feature/option if you are operating in one of these "additional regulatory domains".

I created a one-minute video demonstrating how to fix this. Click to view the video.

An upgrade of your Flash video player may be needed.

Otherwise, here's the steps to resolve it.

  1. On the Symbol device, go to the Today screen.
  2. Click the wireless icon on the start page.
  3. In the pop-up, select "Options."
  4. In the drop-down, select "Regulatory."
  5. Uncheck "Enable 802.11d"
  6. Tap "Save"

That should do it!

Re: Symbol (Motorola) device cannot connect to wireless network

Thanks for the tip! I did pull out some hair. Good thing it grows back quickly.

Symbol shouldn't be defaulting this option to ON for USA sales.
