Often during a demo of our Fixed Asset solution for Dynamics GP, I am asked about printing a fixed asset label. Since fixed assets are typically things that have value and depreciate over an extended period of time, you will want your fixed asset label to last longer than the fixed asset itself.

Printing your own labels will require a bar code printer and bar code design and printing software. You will want to use a thermal transfer printer, not a direct thermal. Direct thermal does not use a ribbon, but requires the use of a heat sensitive substrate which is activated by the print head to create the bar code image. You will also want to avoid printing labels using your laser and inkjet type printers, the label will start to fade over time. Thermal transfer printing uses a ribbon. We recommend a resin ribbon since this type of ribbon will give you the most durable imprint and is best for printing on synthetic materials such as polyester, polyamide, etc.  You will want to consider a bar code label that is more durable than your standard paper label. There are polypropylene, polyester, and other synthetic labels that offer durability. Your selection should be based on the environment.

The other option is to order serialized pre-printed asset labels.Example Asset Label There is a wide variety of labels specifically for assets available including polyester, polypropylene, foil, and aluminum. This also offers you additional options of affixing asset labels. You can also have your company information included on the label.

But I want to print additional asset information on my label. How can I do this if my label is just a pre-printed serialized asset ID?

Keep in mind that the bar code is the unique identifier of the asset in the database. The details of that asset are stored in the database. It is not required that you have the additional information about the asset displayed on the asset label itself. If there is a reason to include the additional information for an asset on the label, consider printing the additional information on a separate label than the asset ID. You can use a pre-printed label that will last the life of your asset, but potentially use a less expensive label stock for the additional information. If you do decide to print your asset labels yourself, be sure to invest in the correct printing technology and label type.

Re: Fixed Asset Labels: Should I buy pre-printed or print my own?

Hi,
I am trying to find information on NiceLabel. What I need to be able to do is assign an Asset tag during receiveing. I can use pre-printed tags however does the core receiving product suite allow for Asset Tag assignments?

Let me know.

Re: Fixed Asset Labels: Should I buy pre-printed or print my own?

Von - Thank you for the question. As part of our Add New Asset transaction, we offer the ability to create the receiving transaction as well as the new asset record for items flagged as capital items. This is currently not supported in our standard inventory receiving transaction; however, it may be added in a future release. In either case, we currently do not offer any auto-assignment for the Asset ID. We certainly are happy to provide this as a modification for you. We will also evaluate adding this option in the future.

Please feel free to contact me at 262-646-3590 x112 to discuss in more detail.

Thanks. Pam
